What is CLARIVEIN?
CLARIVEIN is the trade name of an ultrasound guided procedure that combines use
of a rotating wire with a sclerosing solution. The full name is the CLARIVEIN OCCLUSION
CATHETER.
How does it work?
A very fine mechanical wire is inserted into the main vein under ultrasound guidance.
The wire is then rotated at very high velocity inside the vein to mix and disperse
the sclerosant onto the inside of the vein wall to seal the vein shut.
What are the advantages?
It is a fast procedure that requires minimal local anaesthetic and much less pain
than from radiofrequency and endovenous laser treatments. As CALRIVEIN is non-thermal
i.e. not involving heat it can treat near nerves without concern for nerve damage.
What are the disadvantages?
CLARIVEIN is not suitable for all patients, especially if have had previous surgery.
CLARIVEIN is a relatively new treatment and as a consequence there is less long
term follow up data on success rates compared to other ultrasound guided treatments.
As sclerosant solution is involved there can be a limit to the number of veins that
can be treated in one session which means more than one treatment session may be
necessary.
