Laser treatment of leg veins can either be applied externally when it is called
surface laser treatment or internally to the inside of the vein wall when it is
called endovenous laser treatment (EVLT).
What is laser treatment?
Laser treatment involves the use of a beam of light to heat and destroy the surface
veins. It is mainly used for the treatment of facial capillaries and veins but can
also be used in treating some types of leg veins.
Which types of veins are suitable?
Laser is best suited to the smallest size of leg veins.
What sort of laser is used?
The latest laser for the treatment of leg veins is the variable pulse YAG laser.
Is it painful?
As the laser produces a concentrated light beam it can be felt on the skins surface.
Some patients find it uncomfortable but we use a system with a cooling spray to
minimise discomfort and reduce skin reaction.
Are there side effects?
There is no breakage of the skin and subsequently no bleeding. There may be some
redness or slight burning sensation for the first few days. This can be relieved
by treating with ice packs. Minor blistering can occur if you have sensitive skin.
Increased pigmentation due to iron from the blood (haemosiderin) can occur. This
is similar to how an area of skin can go a brown colour after bruising. This typically
resolves over several weeks although rarely it may be long lasting.
How many treatments?
This will depend on the number of veins that are treated and the level of improvement
sought. Typically patients require three or four treatments.
What are the costs?
This will be discussed at the initial consultation but Medicare does not provide
a rebate for laser treatment of leg veins. The government will also charge GST of
10%.
Who does the treatment?
All laser treatments are performed by experienced medical practitioners who have
been fully trained in the latest leg vein treatment methods.
What happens after the treatment?
Normal work activity can be recommenced immediately. If there is any discomfort
a cold compress can be reapplied for 10 minutes every hour in the first 24 hours.
You may apply Aloe Vera, Vitamin E or moisturising creams. Avoid sun exposure to
the treated area for 4 weeks after treatment. If a further treatment is required
this will usually be at least 4 weeks after the initial treatment.
